March 28-April 1, 2011

This week was as cool as the Super Bowl!

In Math we took our double digit mutliplication test. Most of us did awesome!!!!

In Social Studies, we learned about the Colorado River. The Colorado River made the Grand Canyon. The Colorado River Compact divided the Colorado River Basin into three groups--the Upper Basin, the Lower Basin, and Mexico. We made posters about the importance of conserving water in the Colorado River and they are posted to our individual wiki pages.

In Language Arts, we made a story map for our upcoming fantasy stories. A story map is something we use to organize our stories.

On Friday we had Minute to Win It. The Student Council put it on to raise money for Autism and to collect canned goods for the Brooklyn Food Pantry. Most of the teachers got called down to play different games. Angela and Nick got chosen to go down for our room. We learned that Desani is a Disco Maniac.

This week was magnificent.

Have a great Spring Break!

March 21-25, 2011

This week was cool, just like Mrs. Tomlin.

In Social Studies, we learned about the Southwest. We visited Oklahoma; Texas; Carlsbad Caverns; the Grand Canyon; and Phoenix, Arizona. One fact about Oklahoma is this state is called the "Sooner State". One fact about Texas is that for 9 years Texas was its own country. One fact about Carlsbad Caves is that more than half a million visitors visit there each year. One fact about the Grand Canyon is it is 277 miles long and 1 mile deep. One fact about Phoenix, Arizona is the temperatures can get to 121 degrees. We also went to Hoover Dam. One fact about this place is it was built more than 70 years ago. We also took a test and wrote a newspaper article about the Alamo. We turned our article into a real newspaper clipping and they are posted on our individual wiki pages.

In Math, we kept doing problems out of our old math book. We are working on multiplying 3 digits by 2 digits.

In Language Arts, we continued to edit and infer. We also edited our 5 square paper that we are revising for caps and ends.

This week was magnificent like Mrs. Tomlin.

March 14-18, 2011

This week was sub-tastic.

This week on Thursday and Friday we had Mr. Panter as our sub. We had a sub because Mrs. Tomlin had to go to Detroit so she could do a presentation on using technology in the classroom.

This week in Language Arts, we learned about inference. Inference is when you guess what's going to happen at the end of a story by using the clues the author gives you. We also added a simile, metaphor, alliteration and 5 describing words to our papers we're revising.

This week in Math, we reviewed 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication.

This week in Social Studies, we finished our glogs on the Midwest. We also took an assessment. Also, we learned about corn. Corn is an important crop in the Midwest and is used in many different products such as animal feed, furniture, and a type of gasoline called ethanol.

On Friday, the people that made their AR goals got to go bowling at Ten Pin Bowling Alley in Tecumseh. It was lots and lots of fun.

This week was bowl-rific!

March 7-11, 2011

This week went by like a speeding car.

This week in Language Arts, we finished our car ad. They all look cool. Check them out in the booklet up top. We also picked one of the writings we have done to fix the format.

This week in Math, we learned the short and long versions of multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. For example: 25 x 15. To do the short way, you first multiply 25 x 5 = 125. Then you put a zero under the 5 in 125. Then multiply 25 x 1. With the zero that equals 250. Then you add it up--125 + 250 = 375. Now, to do the long way, you have to expand the number in 15 to 10 and 5. The number 25 stays the same because its on the top. So now you do 25 x 10 = 250. Then you do 25 x 5 = 125. The last thing you do is add. So you do 250 + 125 = 375. Those are the ways to multiply 2 digits by 2 digits.

This week in Social Studies, we read about the states in the Midwest. We also read about World War II and how it helped women gets jobs. We selected 4 places we visited in the Midwest and we are making a glog online.

This week we had a Science Assembly. An example of the tricks they did was they took a balloon named Bobby, and put him on a candle. After he was put on the candle, he went KA-BOOM. He literally exploded.

This week was as awesome as an explosion.

February 28-March 4, 2011

This week was musical!

On Monday we went to Adrian College to hear the Adrian Symphony. We also got to hear an opera singer who is originally from Adrian.

In Math, we learned about prime and composite numbers. For example, 24 is a composite number because it has more than 2 factors. The factors of 24 are 1,2,3,4,6,8,12, and 24. An example of a prime number is 11 because it only has 2 factors. Now we are going to talk about 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication and 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication and then 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication. An example of 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication is 99 x 3. The answer is 297 because 3 x 9 = 27. You write down the 7 and carry the 2. Then you do 3 x 9 again and it is 27. Then you add the 2 that you carried and that is 29. Put them together and that's how you get the answer.

Now we are moving on to Language Arts. This week we learned how to do a book talk. Our whole class wrote a book talk together on the latest book we all read together, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. We are going to be making our own. We hope you treasure them like us.

Now we are going to talk about how we designed cars (we were inspired by Henry Ford). We designed cars on our laptops. Next week we are going to write ads for them and sell them for who knows how much money! (We're not really selling cars). In Social Studies, we are traveling through the Midwest and that is where we learned about Henry Ford. Did you know that his first car only came in black? That is because black dries faster. Back in the old days cars were expensive. So in 1908 Ford started his own car making business. Instead of having 2 people working on a car, Ford had a whole group of people working on a car. The car moved down the assembly line and each person added a different part. So it only took a short while to make a car. So now you can see that Ford's cars made him money and it was very popular. So, now that you've learned about Henry Ford, let's move on to the rest of the Midwest. Did you know that St. Louis, Missouri is called "The Gateway to the West"? That's a very neat name!

Now we are going to move on to Science. We took our Matter test on Tuesday! Here is a trick question. What has mass and takes up space....Matter! We also made comics on our laptops! (Check out the February Weekly Wiki to see our finished comic book).

And, last, but not least, we had our Student of the Month Assembly. Ariel got Student of the Month and Jacey got Writer of the Month!

So now you see that this week was magical from beginning to end!
